SmartReaders are battery powered devices that are located in a basement. They have a LoRa connection to the SmartPlug that is located in the users home in WiFi range. In most of the situations the SmartReader and SmartPlug need the maximum LoRa range to bridge the gap between WiFi and the electricity meter. In some situations the SmartReader can be located near the SmartPlug, in this case using the maximum LoRa range is overkill and could be more conservative on the battery usage.

With this feature the SmartReader and SmartPlug negotiate an optimal LoRa range usage to optimise the battery usage. The consumer does not need to do anything, both devices will adapt according to the situation. When the optimised LoRa connection can be used, the battery life can be improved up to 5 times.

Spreading factor

This LoRa functionality is called spreading factor improves the battery life in the situation that the SmartReader and SmartPlug are installed close together. LoRa communication has 2 modes, one for low power and decreased range, one for higher power and improved range. Based on the signal strength the SmartReader and SmartPlug will choose the best mode to operate.

Improved LED behaviour

Part of this functionality is an improved LED behaviour. To show the user if a SmartReader is already connected to a SmartPlug the LED shows a connection state after start-up. When the device is up-and-running pressing the button shows the electricity status via the LED.

Commissioned status after start-up

Directly after boot the LED will show the commissioned status. It will indicate the following behaviour.

  • Solid on - SmartReader is already commissioned to a SmartPlug

  • Blinking LED - SmartReader is not commissioned

Optical status after button press

When pressing the button the LED will show the optical meter connection status. It will show following behaviour.

  • Solid on - probe connected to MME

  • Fast blink - meter not activated through PIN

  • Strobe blink - optical reader not connected properly

Factory reset

When press-and-hold the button within 30 seconds after booting the SmartReader, the user initiates a factory reset. The button needs to be hold (approximately 10 seconds) until the LED turns briefly on and turns off again, release the button. If the action was successful the SmartReader shows a breathing LED behaviour. A factory reset brings the device to the default factory behaviour.
